Chapter Eight

Valentine was aware they were being followed. No matter what tricks he used to throw off their pursuer, they kept returning. For over two weeks, he’d been trying to lose them. Every time he thought he found a safe place for Sera to rest and recover, he’d wake up to evidence that their stalker was once more on their trail.

He never got a proper look at them. They fled as soon as they realized he was watching, but it was too dangerous to leave Sera’s side.

Sera was blissfully unaware, and he’d have liked to keep her this relaxed as long as possible. But the prospect of them simply slipping away was getting thinner and thinner.

If he couldn’t shake their pursuer, then he was going to have to make a stand. They were always doggedly persevering. How many were there? One? Ten? No way to know without stopping.

Even though he was a vampire and had fed—Sven’s blood still sat heavily in his gut—he couldn’t keep going at this pace. Sooner or later, he was going to have to turn back and stand his ground. Before he was too exhausted.

Sera squirmed on his back as he carried her. She was trying her best to stay still, but with being carried and how consistently cold she was, her muscles were no doubt aching. Valentine considered the situation, glancing around the tall trees. There weren’t many good places to set up an ambush.

For all he knew, the wolves were driving him toward their ambush.

“Are you doing okay?” Sera asked when he paused. “I haven’t seen you eat today.”

Valentine crouched until her feet touched the ground. “I’m just trying to figure out my next move. I’m fine; I don’t actually need to eat every single day.”

She frowned in disbelief. Valentine handed her the water bottle, running through the excuses he’d been giving her over the past few days. Eating at night while she slept. Finding berries on the trail. All the while, the need for fresh blood growing stronger and stronger.

“What is our next plan?” Sera pressed. “Are we going to head back to town?”

Valentine’s eyes narrowed.

“Well, we’re not going to find your Traveler if we just keep hiking through the forest. Where are we going?” She folded her arms defensively.

Valentine kicked the ground, unwilling to admit he hadn’t been going in any particular direction. Just away from the wolf following them. He still had the guns he’d brought to the fight under the full moon as well as the one Sven had shot him with. But no bullets. The werewolves wouldn’t know they were unloaded, but it meant the guns were only useful as bluffs.

Sera tightened her arms. Goosebumps. Shit! How had he not noticed she was getting cold again?

“Valentine,” she said sharply. “I know you’re not telling me everything. Ignorance is not bliss; it’s dangerous. Tell me, and together we’ll figure this out.”

Valentine sighed. She was right. As much as he hated to admit it, she was right. He still hesitated, though.
